Sacramento Kings - They Know How to Start a Basketball Game!

On Tuesday night in Sacramento, at Arco arena, there a basketball game. At basketball games, you have certain expectations for what you will see. You expect to see shooting. They had that. You expect to see ball-handling skills. There was some of that. You expect to see players and coaches. They had them too. You would expect there to maybe be an introduction of the home team, the Sacramento Kings. They did that. You would also expect an introduction of the visiting team, the Detroit Pistons. Yup, they did that...umm...but actually, not so well...

You see, what the good folks at Arco arena decided to do was to put up a video / picture montage of negative images of the City of Detroit. It included abandoned and derelict buildings, boarded-up houses, burned cars and piles of construction rubble. Hmm...not only not so good for PR for the City of Detroit (yet another lesson to those of you out here in the burbs who believe that letting the City "rot" or believe that the suburbs can survive on their own...umm...not so much), it also wasn't a very smart PR move for the Sacramento Kings. Now they have the NBA investigating the incident, mea culpas coming from every level of Kings management and finally we have the full-page ad you will probably be seeing here in Metro Detroit and over in Sacramento.

You know, I hate the fact that they did that, but it kind of seems that's the image of Detroit anyway, a violent city on the verge or complete ruin.

I'm not defending the Arco organization by any means, but I guess I'm wondering why it upsets everyone so much that this happened, when I've spoken to a couple of people who lived in or around Detroit at one time who told me that the video pretty much described the city to a tee.

Like I said on my blog - you are not allowed to bash the "D" unless you live here.

What they did was despicable.

I'm glad the Pistons kicked their asses in the game.

There are plenty of areas that are abandoned in Detroit, but think about why. Michigan's high unemployment rate & ever-increasing rates of companies outsourcing jobs have taken their toll on both Flint and Detroit.

But there are plenty of positives as well. Check out the new arenas & countless renovations that are occuring right now downtown. Nothing beats eating lunch in Campus Marcias. Now if we could have some nice sunny, warm weather. I can't wait for summer to start again.

I totally agree. Michigan is a great place to work, live and play. We are home to so many great things, it's just a question of making sure that that message is getting out to the rest of the nation and the world!
