NYPD Buys Dodge Charger Police Cruisers
The next time you get pulled over by a member of New York's finest you may want to ask him (or her), "Hey, does that thing have a Hemi?". Chances are, it might. The AP is reporting that the NYPD plans to buy 15 police versions of DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Division's Dodge nameplate (phew, that's a mouthfull) Charger for a pilot program to begin this summer. The reason is more than obvious: The need for speed.
"With so many flashy foreign cars on the road, speed matters," said Leonard Lesko, the NYPD's director of fleet services.
"The car that does 110 mph doesn't do it anymore," Lesko said.
In a recent analysis by our own Michigan State Police, Chargers equipped with a Hemi had the quickest acceleration (6.52 seconds to 60 mph) and fastest lap time (150 mph) of any police vehicle tested. (Allpar has copies of the speed tests through the MSP as well as other police agencies)
If they pass inspection on this summer's test, they could replace hundreds of squad cars in the NYPD's 3,000-vehicle patrol fleet, now dominated by Ford Crown Victorias and Chevrolet Impalas.
Auburn Hills, the home to DaimlerChrysler's North American outpost, has also been leasing the Chargers, and according to the chief of police of the city, they are performing admirably.

SWEEET!
Chrysler is a foriegn car...
I mean...yes...I don't deny that. And? ;)
lol! Just a useless point I guess Ray! Too bad though. These foriegn cars are killing our auto industry in Michigan, and my income is largely dictated by the auto industry too.
So I have an issue with selling foriegn cars here. Chrysler: Once an American car, now something I'd never buy!
Its not a useless point, per se. Rather...it's important to point out that a company like DaimlerChrysler still has HUGE infrastructure here in Michigan that certainly won't be going anywhere soon. Especially with someone like Dieter Zetsche at the helm of the company.
Dieter has been quoted in the past as expressing his love of American innovation, and he came to really feel that the American side of operations had a better understanding of how to run the business, which is why he split what was once consolidated operations of financial accounting and strategy staff and split them back up in order to send more of those staff back to Auburn Hills.
So, its true that the profits may not end up being entirely American, but so what? No company listed on the New York Stock Exchange ends up having all of their profits repatriated back here to the good ol' US of A. The more important question is "are they employing HUGE numbers of people here in Michigan?
And the answer to that question is a resounding YES to Michigan. Buy that Chrysler Group product with pride that they are doing more than many companies here in Michigan are doing to employ Americans in general and Michiganders in specific.
If you can give me a better answer than "because they aren't American"...i.e. how that is important, than I'm willing to listen. But frankly, you don't have me convinced yet.
they're foreign alright. built in Canada.
Those damn Canadians! They took 'r jobs! :)
uhmm last time i checked we've been losing all our jobs to u americans... like paying 10k upfront to any canadian nurse that takes a position in a hospital anywhere in the states
Dodges don't last crown victoria's will remain the dominant cruiser for years to come
